Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make a Felt Elephant

Prepare the Pattern Templates:

  1. Print or Draw Templates: Print or draw your elephant pattern templates, including the body, ears, trunk, and legs.
  2. Cut Out Templates: Cut out the pattern pieces from the paper.

Trace the Patterns onto Felt:

  1. Position Templates: Place the paper templates on the felt sheets.
  2. Trace Patterns: Use a marker or chalk to trace around the templates.
    • Trace two body pieces, four leg pieces, two ear pieces, and one trunk piece.

Cut Out the Felt Pieces:

  1. Cut Shapes: Carefully cut out the traced shapes from the felt sheets using sharp fabric scissors.

Sew the Ears:

  1. Inner Ears: If using a contrasting color, glue or sew the inner ear pieces onto the outer ear pieces.
  2. Stitch Ears: Place the two ear pieces together and stitch around the edges, leaving the bottom open.

Assemble the Body:

  1. Pin Body Pieces: Place the two body pieces together and pin them in place.
  2. Attach Ears: Position the ears between the two body pieces at the top, with the open edge of the ears aligned with the body edges.
  3. Sew Body: Sew around the body, leaving a small gap at the bottom for stuffing.

Sew and Attach the Legs:

  1. Sew Legs: Place two leg pieces together and sew around the edges, leaving the top open. Repeat for the other two legs.
  2. Stuff Legs: Lightly stuff the legs with polyfill stuffing.
  3. Attach Legs: Position the legs between the body pieces at the bottom and pin them in place. Sew the legs to the body securely.

Create the Trunk:

  1. Sew Trunk: Fold the trunk piece in half lengthwise and sew along the edge, leaving the top open.
  2. Stuff Trunk: Turn the trunk inside out and stuff it lightly.
  3. Attach Trunk: Sew the trunk to the front of the elephant’s face securely.

Stuff the Body:

  1. Add Stuffing: Stuff the elephant’s body with polyfill stuffing through the gap left earlier. Ensure it is evenly stuffed.
  2. Close Gap: Sew the gap closed once the body is fully stuffed.

Add the Eyes:

  1. Attach Eyes: Sew black beads or use embroidery thread to create the eyes on the elephant’s face.

Optional Decorative Stitching:

  1. Decorative Stitches: Use embroidery floss to add decorative stitches around the edges of the elephant or on the ears and trunk for added detail.

Finishing Touches:

  1. Trim Excess Thread: Trim any excess thread and ensure all parts are securely attached.
  2. Add Decorations: Optionally, add any final decorative elements, such as a small felt flower or a bow.

Congratulations! You've created a charming felt elephant. Enjoy your handmade creation, whether it’s for a gift, decor, or just a fun project.
